The internet is overflowing with sites about standard DIY projects - paint a room, tile a bath, plant a tree - meat and potato basics for anyone, anywhere. The how-to instructions and projects we've chosen go in the opposite direction, highlighting work that's unusual, unique and/or inspired. Often these projects require way too much work, an extraordinary passion for detail, unbelievable patience or just a complete lack of fear, but none of them are boring.
